The nosebleeds

Ghost man is itching to steal third as the spot lights pop on, when the sun started to lose its battle as the inevitable night took over. The pitcher searches the stars for any guidance on how to strike out this final inning. He was never any good at reading signs, since his sweetheart is sitting on the bleachers with someone else, not even paying attention to him. The crowd cheers his name from the nose bleeds inside his mind, blocking out any thought of the world around him. I can tell he's got something up his sleeve. Trying to figure out the future in a split second is close to impossible. Ghost man takes a silent step. A head start won't save his life, but his stance says "I want to go home".

The pitcher strikes a pose, one that was taught by his father and his father before him. Picture perfect he stood with leg raised, ready to be printed on his own baseball card, to be sought out by collectors for generations to come.  The announcer in his head calls out the windup that pulls the air from the audience’s lungs. A curve that can make a shooting star miss its mark. The ball disrupts the flow of early June fireflies as the bat makes contact, like heat lightning connecting two hearts. Pure electricity that can jump start the dead back to life.  The ball soars into the unknown beyond the pools of familiar light, like our hopes for a future where we can do this every Friday night, and live these moments of being young forever. The ghost men take a victory, as the final one joins the celebration at home plate, as a reminder nights like these are fleeting, as they fade into the background, accompanied by fireworks lifting from the skyline, like spaceships heading to the moon.
