“That plastic Jack-o-lantern that sits in the window year-round is lit every year. No one ever found out why or how. It’s almost impossible, because…you know…The Incident.
“Wait, you never heard this story before? Oh, well, honey, you are in for a treat!
“The last family who lived there disappeared. There's absolutely no other way to describe it – they just vanished. Something strange happened to the family who lived there before them, too. Some even say it happened to the family before that family…
“When? Hell – it happened way before I moved here, and I always thought it was just a local rumor. You know - something the kids made up. Sort of explains why an average family like them got so lucky with such a nice house on this end of town. They were nice, normal folk – an average nuclear family, I’d say; a mom, dad, and four children. You would think there would be for-sale signs or at least a conversation with a neighbor if they had been planning on leaving. Come to think of it – I’m pretty sure they still have my jello mold from last year's Halloween party!
“That’s when it started happening, you know. When they started…disappearing. Halloween, five years ago. Now, every year, I catch the local kids daring each other to get close enough to see inside. One child succeeded, and I heard through the grapevine – his mother goes to my salon – that it's all still there. Everything is left just the way it was, only now covered in dust, of course. I wish he saw my jello mold…but that’s neither here nor there.
“I heard the boy also saw a small girl, the youngest child in the family. Said she was – get this – playing with blocks. That is, until she looked up and saw him peeking at her through the window. That's when all the other family members appeared one by one…scared the poor kid half to death, his scream woke me from a sound sleep! I hurried to the window and saw him and his three friends go running down the road, bags of candy in tow, still dressed as skeletons and ghouls.”
“Who knows how many families are trapped inside that house? Or even if they know they’re trapped at all. All us neighbors are just waiting for the next ‘For Sale’ sign to appear in the front yard. As of now, and for all I know…
“No one's home.”
